Media Awarness

Research Background

Schizophrenia is a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.

A pharmaceutical client is planning to launch a new drug treating it and they are interested in running an Awareness survey among the general population of the Greater Khartoum area to measure how informed they are of Schizophrenia and the treatment options for it.

This survey will be conducted on several waves, every 6 months, to measure and assess the efficiency and benefit of the accompanying awareness campaign, which will be monitored as well by a monthly media monitoring survey.

Research Objective

Client’s aim is to assess the Awareness level of the general population across the region of Greater Khartoum.

The awareness will be measured for the following point :

Nature of the disease

Treatment options

Availability of treatment

Support options

Research Method

Awareness will be measured through Descriptive (Quantitative) Research with citizens of the greater Khartoum region representing the entire population of Sudan.

The fieldwork will be done via face-to-face using door-to-door methodology; Sample selection will be done via stratified random selection (SRS). A nationally representative sample will be selected.

What is a Stratified Random Sampling?

  1. Each city/area is divided to PSU’s with pre-classified socio-economic classification as in our case it will be the different neighborhoods. Across each wave, we will maintain comparable PSU’s (similar SEC, Size, etc…) to render the research higher consistency in the sample profile.
  2. Each PSU is further divided into SSUs (Secondary Sampling Unit). SSUs are streets / neighbourhoods within a PSU. The number of SSUs in a PSU is directly related to the size of the PSU, i.e. the larger the PSU the greater the number of SSUs within the PSU. After determining the SSUs each interviewer is given a starting point in the SSU. The interviewer starts by taking the first house on his / her right hand. If an interview was successful the interviewer leaves 3 houses and start in the fourth.
  3. Quotas are assigned in terms of regions, class, age and gender yet simple random selection (SRS) technique will be applied within fieldwork locations.
  4. The research will be carried out with different age groups of both sexes to represent the general population.
  5. The interviews will be in urban areas only

Research Sampling

  • A total of 500 respondents split across greater Khartoum. The breakdown of the sample is as below:
  • Age: Any member of the household whose age is 15 years or more to take part in this survey. The sample will be spilt to represent all age groups.
  • Gender: Both males and females will be included.
  • Coverage: Areas will include, Khartoum, Bahri and Om Durman.
  • The members in the household should be stated in the area for more than three months.
